Having demonstrated, publicly, for several years now that the Sport of Kings can be beaten, I am often approached by folks wondering if I have ever attempted to play the ponies for a living, and whether or not I believe such an endeavor is possible — or practical. My answers are simple: yes, yes and generally not. Although I genuinely believe that one can turn a profit playing the races, I’m not sure it is a viable career option (at least for most). Heat, electric, food, clothes and shelter, all those annoying expenses, tend to whittle away the capital needed for that kind of venture.

I was first published on the subject in 2000 by American Turf Monthly, and that article was so well received that Blood-Horse Publications / Eclipse Press asked me to write sort of a layperson's handbook on the topic which we titled, Handicapping the Wall Street Way: Picking Xtra Winners at the Track. I would not have put my name on it if I did not think it could prove profitable to the reader.

Similairly, I would not have risked my 20-year reputation in the regulated securities industry by becoming partners with somebody I did not KNOW for certain had the integrity to 1.
